Summer 2026 Is Shaping Up to Cook You Alive

Forecasters are calling for widespread above-average temperatures across most of the country this summer. That’s not just a comfort problem — it’s a survival problem. Work injury risk climbs steeply once the mercury pushes past 90°F, and your reaction time, judgment, and grip strength all degrade with it. It’s no coincidence that June through August routinely see 19,000 to 20,000-plus truck crashes every single month. Heat doesn’t just wear on your cargo and your equipment. It wears on you, and a fatigued, dehydrated driver behind 80,000 pounds is a rolling liability.

This isn’t a “stay hydrated, buddy” pep talk. This is the specific stuff that keeps your truck running, your freight legal, and your body out of the ER. Let’s get into it.

Pre-Trip Adjustments for Extreme Heat

Your standard pre-trip doesn’t cut it when the pavement hits 140°F. Heat changes the physics of your rig, and the smart drivers adjust for it before they roll.

Tire Pressure: Check Cold, Not Hot

Air expands with heat. For every 10°F rise in ambient temperature, tire pressure climbs roughly 1-2 PSI, and highway friction adds even more. That’s why you always check tires cold — before you’ve driven a mile. If you air up to spec on a 100°F afternoon after two hours of driving, you’ll be dangerously underinflated the next cold morning. Underinflated tires build heat internally, and heat is what causes blowouts and those alligator strips littering the shoulder. Heat kills batteries faster than cold. Extreme temperatures accelerate fluid evaporation and internal corrosion, so a battery that survived winter can quit without warning in August. Clean the terminals and load-test before a long haul.

Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke: Know the Difference

This is the section that could save your life, so read it twice. These two conditions are not the same thing, and confusing them gets people killed.

Heat exhaustion is your body waving a warning flag. Symptoms include heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, dizziness, and a headache. Your body temperature may be elevated but you’re still sweating. The move: get to A/C or shade, loosen clothing, sip water or an electrolyte drink, and put cool wet cloths on your neck and wrists. Do not get back behind the wheel until you feel normal.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911. The critical tell is that sweating stops. The skin goes hot, red, and dry. Body temperature rockets to 103°F or higher. You’ll see confusion, slurred speech, a rapid strong pulse, and possibly loss of consciousness. At this point the body’s cooling system has failed completely and organ damage starts within minutes. The move: call for help immediately, move to cool shade, and aggressively cool the person with wet cloths or ice on the neck, armpits, and groin while you wait. Every minute counts.

The progression from exhaustion to stroke can happen fast. If you catch yourself feeling “off,” don’t tough it out. Pride has killed more drivers than weakness ever did.

Hydration Math That Actually Works

“Drink water” is useless advice. Here’s the real math. A working adult in the heat loses roughly one liter — about 34 ounces — of sweat per hour of moderate exertion, and more during a hard load-and-tarp. The general guideline is 8 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes while working in the heat. That’s roughly 24 to 32 ounces per hour, and it needs to start before you’re thirsty. Thirst means you’re already behind.

Aim for at least one gallon of water across a hot driving day, more if you’re doing physical work. But plain water alone isn’t enough — when you sweat heavily you dump sodium, potassium, and magnesium, and flooding yourself with pure water dilutes what’s left. Know this cold: under federal regulations, you cannot legally operate a commercial vehicle when your ability or alertness is so impaired — by fatigue, illness, or heat — that it’s unsafe to keep driving (49 CFR 392.3). Heat exhaustion absolutely qualifies. If a dispatcher pushes you to run while you’re showing symptoms, you have both the right and the legal obligation to stop.

The federal whistleblower protections under the Surface Transportation Assistance Act also protect you from retaliation for refusing to operate a truck that violates safety regulations or that you reasonably believe poses a genuine hazard — including a broken A/C that makes the cab unbearable or an unsafe environment. Document the condition, notify your carrier in writing, and keep records. No load is worth your life or your CDL.
